Catching up – TheBigDayMinus1 and TheBigDay

So, the last time you heard from the intrepid travellers, we were planning on getting up early on Monday morning to scout out some Inkan ruins.. TheBigDayMinus1. Machu Picchu – it’s an adventure just to get your tickets!

Ollantaytambo to Agua Calientes and Machu Picchu Tuesday was the longest touristy-exploration day of our trip so far (and likely to be one of the longest of The Big Trip).  It was also the day that, so far, required the most preparation, advance purchases, research and planning. And it still delivered a few surprises and travel lessons. Like many other travelers, we found the whole process confusing and frustrating! Another day, another Tipico Meal dinner

Another wonderful, quiet day in wonderful, quiet Ollantaytambo Seriously, this is the most relaxing, peaceful time we’ve had on vacation in a long time. Our trips are always fun and usually have some element of relaxing (especially as the girls get older), but this time is special. I think it’s largely because we were all so busy, nervous and excited in the lead-up to the trip (especially the portion after NJ& NYC). Important research: aka the hunt for Java

So, research is often the key to a smooth trip. You need to know what countries require visas (including ones require applications while you’re still in your home country), what vaccinations you should have, what neighbourhoods are safe, etc. But one of my key (if minor) preparations is — finding out where the Starbucks are. Let me be clear – I don’t travel so that I can have my North American favourites wherever I am. However, I have tagged this post as “frugal” because finding a Starbucks is one way to save money.
