The Big Trip Revisited

Read the daily account of The Big Trip on Medium.com We managed to get a lot of the trip onto this blog. There are some great posts that tell parts of the story. But like an iceberg, there is way more under the surface than what you can see on top. I have 50 pages of notes about what we did in Peru and afterwards, and most of that never made it online. The challenges of using the technology we had (mobile devices won’t replace real computers anytime soon!), plus the huge time challenges we faced throughout the trip, meant — Read the Rest…

The Big Party!

Thanks for following our blog about The Big Trip. On Feb 1 2014, we’re having The Big Party — around the world in 157 minutes. Save the date and RSVP for details. There will be photos (LOTS of photos). We have somewhere around 17,000 photos total, but we hope to get it down to a few hundred really good ones. The Big Party is also when we will unveil “The Henrys,” our version of the Oscars, where we award the best of the best from The Big Trip. Let the speculation begin about which locations were the favourites, which restaurants — Read the Rest…

Planes, trains and automobiles!

I thought it would be fun to keep a record of all the different modes of transportation we’ve used to get us around the world. Unfortunately, hot air balloon is not going to be one of them, I don’t think. But here’s the ones that we have used…I’ll update this as we go… Honda Civic from our house to Mississauga, and then the airport Air Canada Embraer 175 from Toronto to Newark Minivan shuttle from Newark airport to Madison Hotel NJ Transit commuter train from Madison Hotel (Convent station) to Madison station Mini Cooper from Dad’s place back and forth — Read the Rest…

Farewell Toronto!

I think it was around 5am when I thought to myself, “If Dave is coming at 1pm, then we’re not going to get everything packed up in time.” Sure enough, at 2pm Barbara, Dave and I were hauling boxes to the basement like a bucket brigade desperate to put out a fire. It really all goes back to two weeks earlier…we thought Barbara would have two weeks off work before we left, and so that would help with tying up loose ends. Of course, things didn’t work out that way. She had only one week off, and had to wrap — Read the Rest…

Balloons

20130330-131053.jpg

My mom has posted something about balloons but this is the full story. At the Newark airport there were some balloons so me and Jill wanted them. We jumped and jumped but we could reach them. But this dude came and grabbed them for us! I love balloons so I took them on the shuttle ride (I lost the feeling in my arm from holding them). But after that I got the balloons into the hotel room and they are still there right now.

The making of the Sweet Tooth Burger

The Sweet Tooth Burger was created at the BBQ party before we left for the airport. Seb our cousin and us (Jill and Clara) thought of foods we could put chocolate in so we decided to make a chocolate burger. And it tasted awesome!

First day, first passport stamp :)

(Imagine a photo of a US Immigration stamp with March 29 on it…pics to come) So, we’re in “Joisey”. Technically it’s the second stop of our trip – our first was Mississauga! Getting out of the house was a bit of a challenge, but we made it. That’s due in great part to our wonderful family. Nana and Grandpa did a lot: packing, running errands, playing host to two bouncing-off-the-walls 10 year olds. Auntie Sherri, Uncle Kevin and Seb hosted a Bon Voyage BBQ, which turned into an extended babysitting session as Julian and I worked with Dad’s timely help, — Read the Rest…
