Planes, trains and automobiles!

I thought it would be fun to keep a record of all the different modes of transportation we’ve used to get us around the world. Unfortunately, hot air balloon is not going to be one of them, I don’t think. But here’s the ones that we have used…I’ll update this as we go… Honda Civic from our house to Mississauga, and then the airport Air Canada Embraer 175 from Toronto to Newark Minivan shuttle from Newark airport to Madison Hotel NJ Transit commuter train from Madison Hotel (Convent station) to Madison station Mini Cooper from Dad’s place back and forth — Read the Rest…

Madison

I’ve visited Madison before many times of course, and usually I’m driving.  So I know the area well.  Therefore, when the shuttle driver took the second wrong turn while trying to follow the GPS directions to the hotel, I was able to suggest a more fruitful direction. By that point, Barbara and I were so relieved to be near the end of our very, very long day (extra long for me, having had no sleep the night before), that we didn’t really care if the driver took longer to get where we’re going.  The flight from Toronto had been smooth, — Read the Rest…

Peru – land of contrasts

If you know your South American geography, then when you think of Peru, two or three things probably come to mind:  Machu Picchu, the Amazon, and the Nazca lines.  We saw only one of these iconic places in Peru, but found a country full of other worthwhile sites and experiences. Philosophically, the thing that struck me the most about Peru, was the contrasts:  urban/rural, rich/poor, coast/highlands, Spanish/Quechua.  (Quechua, pronounced Ketch-u-wa, are the native people of Peru.)  In the morning, you can be in a community high in the Andean mountains, that has no electricity or running water, and where people — Read the Rest…

Farewell Toronto!

I think it was around 5am when I thought to myself, “If Dave is coming at 1pm, then we’re not going to get everything packed up in time.” Sure enough, at 2pm Barbara, Dave and I were hauling boxes to the basement like a bucket brigade desperate to put out a fire. It really all goes back to two weeks earlier…we thought Barbara would have two weeks off work before we left, and so that would help with tying up loose ends. Of course, things didn’t work out that way. She had only one week off, and had to wrap — Read the Rest…

Adios, Peru y bom dia Brasilia!

(I hope I got that right!) Just a quick note to say that we have arrived, safe and sound and happy, in Brazil. We are currently dining poolside, having signed our dinner of spaghetti, grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, pizza and banana-milk to our room!  Clara and Jill did a good job at billards while waiting for the food.   Tomorrow, we are headed to Iguazu Falls — probably the Brazilian side.  Sunday we will visit the other country`s side, (therefore, probably Argentina) and Monday is up for grabs/ I suspect the junior set will be lobbying for plenty of swimming — Read the Rest…

Hasta la vista, Ollantaytambo; Buenos tardes, Cusco!

Saturday was a ruins-and-relaxation day. We hired a driver to take us from Ollantaytambo to Cusco, via some historic sites – Salneras (salt production in open tiers, very cool!), Moray (tiered crop fields, estimated to be a working agricultural laboratory), and Chinchero (city with Incan era walls, cathedral and roads). All were interesting though our abiility to get much out of the visits was hampered by not having guided tours. It turned out that guides are only on-site when tour buses are expected, and we weren’t visiting on the bus’ schedule.  It was fine, though, as you can tell by — Read the Rest…

We saw a lot of Incan sites today

We did a city tour of Cusco today and saw lots of sites. By the third site, I had this sense of déjà vu. The history of all the sites seemed to blend together. You can use the tool below to make up your very own Incan site story…
