a day in the life Istanbul
Snapshot of our day Sleep in Do dishes Make eggs and reheat pasta for brunch Gather clothes for laundry Play on ipods & read Leave for afternoon of errands and sightseeing… Drop off laundry Seek out ferry to Asia Take ferry back to Europe Walk walls of old city… Edited to add: we did all of that except that we caught a ferry up the Golden Horn, not across the Bosphorous. We also walked through a lot of local neighborhoods and visited a big park. For most of our outing, we were the only foreigners in sight! I am — Read the Rest…
Madison
I’ve visited Madison before many times of course, and usually I’m driving. So I know the area well. Therefore, when the shuttle driver took the second wrong turn while trying to follow the GPS directions to the hotel, I was able to suggest a more fruitful direction. By that point, Barbara and I were so relieved to be near the end of our very, very long day (extra long for me, having had no sleep the night before), that we didn’t really care if the driver took longer to get where we’re going. The flight from Toronto had been smooth, — Read the Rest…
Things we‘ve seen, heard and eaten in Istanbul .. a photo essay

Due to technical issues all but the first two photos are actually royalty free stock photos found at www.123rf.com At some point I hope to add our photos, but this should provide a good overview in the interim…. Very smooth on the rails but with a lot less seating than TTC streetcars Galata Tower Turkish tea, this cup pictured with lemon Street food vendors who make a show of their — Read the Rest…
Weird animals in Istanbul
We have been in Istanbul for 1day but this is what we saw: lots of dog, one of which who was chained to a giant sewer pipe, an enclosure of wild puppies, two kittens both of which were 4 inches big wrestling, tons and tons of stray cats, a giant wild rooster, and a guy walking their monkey!
From our 3rd to 4th continent, and counting….
I’m writing this quick post to say that we’ve made it to Istanbul. (cue the They Might Be Giants song of the same name….) https://vimeo.com/m/6746927 I didn’t realise how little posting we did at the safari camp. We have a lot of photos and stories, though, which we hope to post “all in good time”. In the meantime our summary is: www.africaonfoot.com.za is an amazing, eco-friendly and family-friendly camp in the Greater Kruger area. We could not have asked for better guides/rangers, food, staff or accommodations. Even the weather was extremely cooperative. We saw a LOT of animals, especially the — Read the Rest…

Elephants in Kruger
We’ve seen a lot of amazing wildlife so far during our time in the Kruger area. This elephant herd, seen this afternoon, is the absolute best. I’m very pleased also that my video-ing was equal to the moment for the most part, until about 1:27 in, when the elephants had passed us and were walking into the sun, so I couldn’t really get a good view from then on. I hope you enjoy this little taste of Africa
Update from Kruger
The girls had a private game drive this morning with the second (junior) ranger who we’ve nicknamed their “South African Uncle Kevin” (his name is actually Kevin, BTW, and he has blonde hair & a winning smile, although we don’t know if he’s a long distance runner. He doesn’t admit to knowing how to juggle though). The girls saw a pack of (endangered) African wild dogs eating an antelope they’d already taken down, some giraffes and a few more things. The adults (Julian, Dad, another guest John, and I ) went on a walking safari with the first (senior) ranger — Read the Rest…
