Planes, trains and automobiles!
I thought it would be fun to keep a record of all the different modes of transportation we’ve used to get us around the world. Unfortunately, hot air balloon is not going to be one of them, I don’t think. But here’s the ones that we have used…I’ll update this as we go… Honda Civic from our house to Mississauga, and then the airport Air Canada Embraer 175 from Toronto to Newark Minivan shuttle from Newark airport to Madison Hotel NJ Transit commuter train from Madison Hotel (Convent station) to Madison station Mini Cooper from Dad’s place back and forth — Read the Rest…

An afternoon, two by two

So, this afternoon we split up and enjoyed the rare opportunity to hang out separately in twos… Julian and Jillian went over to Marina Bay and went “skating” – indoors on a plastic rink. I’m sure you’ll get a glimpse of that at some point as there’s a video apparently. Jill says it felt like the way you glide / wobble on the edge of a rink on the rubber or plastic rynner while waiting to get on “real” ice. Clara and I headed over to Sentosa, the island at the south edge of the city. We’d liked the look — Read the Rest…
A trip on the MRT – a SMRT choice

It’s been a while since we posted so I thought I (Barbara) would provide a quick fix to that… A photo essay about how Jilly and I got ourselves this afternoon from the park to our cozy bunks. Excuse the less than stellar photography – I had to contend with moving scenery and a moving target for a human subject! But hopefully you’ll still get the gist of things….

Kathmandu- rest for the weary

7 nights, no plans, beautiful views, friendly people, plenty of English spoken, and lots of food options in walking distance… what more could four weary world travellers want? An affordable upgrade to a roof-top room; this is our view! There is also a ‘regular’ part of the room, with a Queen bed, and another twin. So, lots of sleeping and resting space. Sometimes we can also get WiFi in our room! It’s only supposed to be accessible from the garden but our vantage point allows us access if we’re lucky. We’ve had a very long day. — Read the Rest…

a day in the life Istanbul
Snapshot of our day Sleep in Do dishes Make eggs and reheat pasta for brunch Gather clothes for laundry Play on ipods & read Leave for afternoon of errands and sightseeing… Drop off laundry Seek out ferry to Asia Take ferry back to Europe Walk walls of old city… Edited to add: we did all of that except that we caught a ferry up the Golden Horn, not across the Bosphorous. We also walked through a lot of local neighborhoods and visited a big park. For most of our outing, we were the only foreigners in sight! I am — Read the Rest…
Catching up – TheBigDayMinus1 and TheBigDay
So, the last time you heard from the intrepid travellers, we were planning on getting up early on Monday morning to scout out some Inkan ruins.. TheBigDayMinus1. You know that old saying, a bad rehearsal makes for a good performance? Well, we were counting on that on Monday, when we woke up 45 minutes later than planned! We couldn’t do that on Tuesday or there would be no trip to Machu Picchu. The longer story is that I slept with earplugs on Sunday night, and Julian generally sleeps like the dead so we both missed the alarm at 6am. The — Read the Rest…
The end of the beginning
“So please tell me you’re at least a tiny bit excited now?!” I asked the girls, with a little exaggeration in my voice. They were sitting across the table from me, in the deserted food court of concourse A, terminal 8, at JFK airport in New York City. It was 11pm and our flight to Peru was scheduled to take off at five minutes to midnight. We were surrounded by empty tables, with the chairs stacked on top of them, silently waiting for the morning travellers. Nonetheless, there was still a small lineup at the McDonalds, which was still open, — Read the Rest…
